People love pets. They're cute, cuddly and fun. But they also require food and water, training, exercise, attention and medical care. Unfortunately, some people find they are in over their heads in caring for animals. That's where the Walker Animal Shelter comes in. We take in hundreds of unwanted and stray animals from Walker.

Our mission is to promote and protect the health, safety and welfare of people and pets in the community, and reduce the dangers and nuisances caused by irresponsible pet ownership. We also protect pets from abuse, neglect and homelessness.

We provide the best care available for all of the stray animals that enter our newly renovated facility. All those who leave our shelter have their age-appopriate vaccinations, de-worming and flea-prevention treatments; have been spayed or neutered; and have tested negative for heartworms.

Report a stray or nuisance animal

To report a stray or nuisance animal during normal business hours, call the Walker Animal Shelter at 225.791.3482. To report a stray or nuisance animal at night, on weekends and holidays in an emergency, contact the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office at 225.686.2241. Unforturtunately, we do not have the capacity to accept animals from outside the Walker city limits.

Missing pet?

If your pet is missing, please call the Walker Animal Shelter at 225.791.3482 as soon as possible. Provide a photograph if you have one. We will make every effort to reunite you with your lost pet, including alerting the community via our Facebook page to be on the lookout. You can also post fliers and put an announcement online. Adoptions

The Walker Animal Shelter makes every effort to locate new homes for stray and abandoned pets in our care. We routinely collaborate on adoption efforts with the Livingston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty for Animals [LSPCA] and other regional rescue organizations. We have extended our hours to include Saturdays for the convenience of families interested in adoption. We hold adoption days in a variety of locations throughout the Capital Region in hopes of making the animals in our care more accessible to the public. And we host an annual Orphan Animal Fun Day in Punk Smith Park with family-friendly activities to draw attention to animals in need of adoption and to educate the public in proper pet care. Animals currently available for adoption are listed on the Walker Animal Shelter Facebook page. To see that listing, click here.
