Sunday afternoon in the park

IT'S NOT LONG before the sun sinks in the sky, but Punk Smith Park off Burgess Drive is still a busy place. The merry-go-round is a spinning blur of flailing arms and wind-blown hair and flowery dresses lifted by the temporary breeze. Across the park, two young boys are deep into a shoot-out with plastic water guns. On a bench, a father feeds his toddler son the last vestiges of a cherry snowball - although much of it has landed on his nose. The swings creak as they go back and forth. And under one of the two pavilions, a birthday party is winding down. "This is such a great place," says one young mother as she watches her own four children clamor atop the monkey bars. "We come here as often as we can."
