Special events
The City of Walker hosts a number of free, family-friendly special events throughout the year, including parades and festivals. The city also offers the Summer Art Camps for Kids, which charges a nominal fee for art courses taught by some of the best artists and instructors in the region.
Mardi Gras Parade
The City of Walker offers a parade during the Mardi Gras season that is completely family friendly. Catch a glimpse of festive floats, antique cars, horseback riders, marching bands, dancers and other performers from throughout the region as they wind their way through the heart of Walker. Beads, candy and other prizes are plentiful! Anyone interested in taking part is encouraged to participate, and there is no entry fee. You can walk, pull a little red wagon, drive a golf cart or ATV, ride in a truck or trailer, or go all out with a float. For all the details, click here.
Summer Art Camps for Kids
Children can explore their artistic side in June and July at the Summer Art Camps for Kids, sponsored by the City of Walker and The Walker Museum & Community Art Gallery. Photography. Scrapbooking, Drawing. Painting. There's a little something for everyone in our very affordable classes taught by some of the best artists in the community. CityFest
Celebrate an old-fashioned Independence Day at the City of Walker's CityFest on the weekend closest to July 4. Look for plenty of activities for adults and children, including our Summer Craft Fair, inflatables, hot-air balloon rides, train rides, live music and more. We'll also have an assortment of festival foods at our Taste of CityFest, including the crowd-pleasing favorite: Snowballs. The celebration ends at dusk with a massive fireworks show. Families are invited to tailgate and set up as early as they'd like. Bring your tent, volleyball net, horseshoes, picnic or barbecue pit and enjoy an afternoon out. Veteran's Day celebration
In November, the Livingston Parish Veteran's Association puts on a massive Livingston Parish Veteran's Day celebration in Walker. The event begins at 10 a.m. with a ceremony honoring veterans from Louisiana’s two War Homes at Walker High School, 12646 Burgess Ave. Buses carrying veterans from the Jackson and Reserve war homes are escorted by the Patriot Guard, Iron Warriors and Sheriff Willie Graves, who will send a helicopter escort to the parish line to greet the caravan. The parade itself will kick off at 12:45 p.m. with a Roll of Thunder from the Patriot Guards and Iron Warriors, followed by a Marine Corps jet flyover at 1 p.m. The parade will feature bagpipes, antique autos, Shriner clowns, the 4077 M.A.S.H. Unit, a 45-foot aircraft carrier float, Corvettes and jeeps carrying more than 40 WWII and Vietnam veterans, marching bands, marching clubs, a Military Order of the Purple Hearts float and more. Country Christmas
Imagine a twinkling wonderland of more than 1 million colorful lights and inflatable and animated displays. Family-friendly movies on a giant outdoor screen. Floats, old-time cars, horses, elves and more winding their way through the heart of Walker. A 30-foot Christmas tree adorned with 1,600 feet of lights and ornaments crafted by first graders. Church choirs caroling. A sure enough snowball fight. And a chance to tell Santa what it is you really want this year. Now stop imagining.
