The City of Walker in conjunction with Waste Management Inc. provides quality residential roadside garbage and trash-collection services funded by fees collected through your utility bill. For those who recycle, we also provide a recycling bin that's available around the clock behind the Walker Municipal Building, 10136 Florida Blvd. We do not offer curbside recycling at this time. For a listing of items that are recyclable and those that are not, click here.

All refuse in the City of Walker is collected on Thursdays. To ensure proper collection, you should have your refuse at the roadside no later than 5:30 a.m. that day. It may be more convenient to place your container there the night before.

Garbage includes all normal household waste, such as paper, plastic, food, cans, housewares and containers.

Trash includes household items that are too large or bulky to fit into the garbage container, including yard waste. These items should be bagged or bundled and placed near the roadside. For additional instructions, please refer to the section below entitled "Yard & Landscape Waste."

RESTRICTIONS: Waste Management will not provide service to unoccupied residences or vacant lots, nor pick up hazardous material, debris or trees from the clearing of a lot, construction or demolition debris produced by a contractor, or any of the following items: paint, batteries, oil, tires, chemicals or explosives.

New to the city? Here's how to start your service.

If you have just moved to Walker, we welcome you! Your garbage collection service is included as part of your utilities. Once you set up utility service, trash removal will begin. For information on how to set up your utilities, click here. If you do not have a green trash receptacle at your location, please contact the Department of Public Works at 225.665.2467, and one will be delivered to you.

Collection schedule & holidays

All refuse in the City of Walker is collected on Thursdays. Please have your container at the roadside no later than 5:30 a.m. that day to ensure proper collection. It may be more convenient to place your container there the night before. The only holidays observed by Waste Management are Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. In the event a holiday falls on the normal collection day, service will be provided the following day for your convenience.

Requesting additional or replacement receptacles

To report a damaged trash receptacle, please call our Department of Public Works at 225.665.2467 during regular business hours. If your can has a broken lid or wheel, we will repair it. If it is beyond repair, we will replace it with another one.

Customers inside the city limits of Walker can request additional receptacles at a cost of $12.50 per additional container per month. A customer can have up to three trash receptacles. To request additional receptacles, please call our Utilities Department at 225.664.3123.

Appliances & white goods

The Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 require that all appliances containing chlorofluorocarbons [CFCs] MUST be tagged by a certified technician certifying removal of all CFCs before removal. Waste Management WILL NOT pick up any appliances containing CFCs. Livingston Parish will collect all white goods within specifications.

Batteries

When buying new batteries, have the vendor or dealer recycle your old ones. Most vendors offer this service for a small fee. Batteries cannot be disposed of in a landfill. Waste Management WILL NOT pick up discarded batteries.

Construction/remodeling material

Waste Management will not pick up construction, remodeling or demolition debris produced by a contractor as part of your normal garbage service. When hiring contractors, specify that they will be responsible for removing all waste from the site. For a fee, arrangements can be made with Waste Management for removal of most construction materials. You may also dispose of construction or demolition debris yourself at the Woodside Landfill. For hours and location, see "Woodside Landfill" below.

Electronics

You may want to consider donating old cell phones, computers, fax machines, MP3 players, telephone systems, laptops, printers, pagers, GPS systems and other electronic items to the Capital Area Corporate Recycling Council, which refurbishes the items and redistributes them to classrooms and schoolchildren in need throughout our region. For more information, click here.

Furniture

Small amounts of furniture will be collected on the regular trash routes. Size and quantity is limited to an amount that one person can safely lift. Larger items will be collected with a boom truck, which makes routine trips through the city as well. A large amount of cast-off furniture or unusually frequent disposal of furnishings from a residential unit will not be collected.

Litter

The City of Walker routinely dispatches clean-up crews throughout the community to eliminate unsightly litter. If you see an area that needs attention, please contact the Walker Municipal Building as quickly as possible at 225.665.4356.

Lot clearing/tree trunks

Ensure that contractors performing work on your property are responsible for the removal of all debris after clearing or cutting operations. Many companies specialize in these type of services. Waste Management can, for a fee, dispose of large amounts of this type of debris. Construction landfills will accept lot clearing material for a fee if a resident chooses to handle the material themselves.

Waste Management WILL NOT pick up any items in front of a vacant lot.

Oil

Most oil-change services will accept used oil for a small fee and as part of the service rendered. Liquids such as used oil cannot be disposed of in a landfill. Waste Management WILL NOT pick up discarded oil.

Paint

Waste Management WILL NOT pick up paint cans still containing paint. Cans MUST be empty.

Recycling

The City of Walker offers around-the-clock recycling. A collection bin is located behind the Walker Municipal Building, 10136 Florida Boulevard. It is available for paper, plastic and aluminum cans. The city does not currently offer curbside recycling service. For a listing of items that are recyclable and those that are not, click here.

Tires

When buying new tires, have the vendor or dealer dispose of or recycle your old tires. Most tire vendors offer this service for a small fee and are required to do so by law. Waste Management WILL NOT pick up used or discarded tires.

Yard & landscape

SMALL, LOOSE ITEMS such as twigs, leaves and grass clippings must be bagged or placed in a container. All containers or bags must be limited to a 33-gallon capacity with a weight limit of 50 pounds. If bags are used, they must support the weight of the contents.

TREE LIMBS should be no more than six feet in length. All limbs should be bundled neatly with no one item more than 50 pounds in weight. Tree limbs, bulky waste and yard waste should be placed by your driveway or in an area that can be clear of telephone, cable or power lines. Make sure there is no overhead obstruction. Yard and landscape waste should never be placed in front of a vacant lot. Waste Management WILL NOT pick up any items in front of a vacant lot. Larger items will be collected with a boom truck.

Please keep limb debris out of the roadway to ensure safe traffic flow.

Tree trimming or removal contractors must dispose of all debris themselves. Waste Management WILL NOT pick up limb debris from a contractor.

Woodside Landfill

Those residents who have items that cannot be disposed of through normal garbage service have the option of disposing of such materials at the Woodside Landfill for a fee.
