Really cool things to do in Walker

From cheering for the home team at a Saturday afternoon baseball game to chowing down on some of the region's best seafood, there's plenty of fun and entertainment in Walker. Here are just a few ideas for living it up. To suggest other cool things to do that we haven't included, send us an email here.

Watch flora & fauna
at Sidney Hutchinson Park

Egrets, ducks and other wildlife make the scenic lake at Sidney Hutchinson Park their home. Sit on the serene banks and rest for a spell, and enjoy the wonders of nature.

Picnic with family & friends at Punk Smith Park

In the heart of Walker, Punk Smith Park has two shaded pavilions for celebrations and other gatherings. There's plenty of fun for small children, whether it be reaching for the sky on a swing, experiencing the thrill of a slide, spinning until they're dizzy on the merry-go-round or pretending to be a superhero atop the jungle gym. The park is fenced and has its own bathroom facilities. For a directory of our parks, click here.

Jammin' at the Jamboree

225 Magazine dubbed the Old South Jamboree "our hometown Branson." Inside the walls of this 40-year-old red-barn building, some of Nashville's biggest stars have played while traversing the country and gospel music circuits. There's a different show every third Saturday of the month, but the Livingston Parish Country & Gospel Jubilee's most popular shows are the "Legends Impersonators," "Kids Gone Country," "The Fabulous '50s" and "A Country Christmas."

Take yourself out to the ballgame

Walker's five baseball fields are the place to be on weekends in the summertime. Players ages 7 to 14 come from all over Louisiana, and their families cheer them on [while munching on ballpark hotdogs, jambalaya and snowcones, of course]. For details, visit the Walker Parks & Recreation site here.

Step back in time at The Walker Museum

Step back in time and discover old Louisiana at The Walker Museum & Community Art Gallery. See the flashing lights from the first police car, the mailboxes from the first post office, even the saw that first cleared the land where the town would be built. Our Community Art Gallery features the work of some of the region's award-winning artists. For details, click here.

Go treasure hunting

There are some terrific finds awaiting you on the shelves of Walker's vintage boutiques on Antique Rowe. Our shops offer a mix of primitive, Victorian and English furniture, jewelry and knick knacks. Some of our favorite found treasures have included wooden golf clubs, old milking jugs, retail signs, metal tea cans, biscuit cutters and an antique saddle. For a listing of shops, click here.

Get that Wildcat spirit

Ever been in the Walker High School gymnasium with the final seconds ticking away on the clock when the girls' basketball team is playing for a championship spot? Or in the stands on a Friday night, wrapped up in a blanket, feeling the beat of the marching band in your chest? If you haven't, you're missing out. Put on some green, get yourself to a game and get that Wildcat spirit.

Explore military history

See treasures from the military in action at war and in peace throughout history in a special exhibit at The Walker Museum called 'Honoring Those Who Serve.' You can see uniforms, weapons, enlistment posters, shell casings, flags, medals of honor, photographs and more in this unique collection of historical military memorabilia. Admission is free. For details, click here.

Dungenous crabs on a Thursday night

Looking for some southern cooking and hospitality? Walker's restaurants boast both. Got a hankering for world-famous Gulf Coast seafood? There's the buffet at LaFleur's. Is it an ice-cold beer and quesadillas you crave? Los Sombreros has both. A thick, juicy steak? Thibodeaux's serves it up. A ham-and-cheese omelette at 2 a.m.? Do the Waffle House. Maybe it's Mongolian Beef or Sweet & Sour Pork. Take your pick of Asian restaurants. Or sit down for Italian in the new, stylish Rotolo's.

Immerse yourself
in the arts

Whether you're an aspiring or experienced artist, The Walker Museum & Community Art Gallery offers plenty of opportunities to get your creative on. Classes and camps for all ages are offered throughout the year. Our Summer Art Camps for Kids offers children ages 6 and up a summertime exploration of their artistic side, learning from some of the best instructors in Livingston Parish. They work with clay, charcoal, acrylics, paper and a variety of other media. Through Art After Dark, adults and older teenagers can spend an evening behind the easel, paint on palet and brush in hand, forging their heart's desire on canvas. For details, click here.

Tee time

Walker doesn't have its own golf course yet, but it is dead center of Louisiana's Audubon Trail, putting dozens of greens within a few minutes' drive. To the east, Phil Mickelsons-in-the-making can aim for birdies at Carter Plantation. To the west, Denham Springs offers Greystone and Baton Rouge has more than a dozen public and semi-private courses from which to choose. Need to get in a few practice swings? Nearby North Park has a public driving range. Tee time is any time.

Movies Under the Stars

When fall temperatures set in, don't waste a minute sitting inside watching sitcoms on a 20-inch screen. Bring a blanket or lawn chairs and some snacks and join us in Sidney Hutchinson Park for family-friendly flicks the way they ought to be seen: On the big screen.

Arts & crafts

Twice a year, the City of Walker hosts an arts and crafts show, the proceeds of which go to purchase Christmas gifts for those in need. Join us in May and October to see the best of what our Livingston Parish artisans have to offer: paintings, carvings, hair bows, photography, jewelry and more.

The perfect place
to begin a day trip

Walker is in the heart of Louisiana's richest cultural region. Drive 20 miles to the west and you're in the state capitol, where you can take your pick of museums, planetariums, riverfront activities and more. Drive 70 more miles west and mais cher, you're in Lafayette - the heart of Cajun country. Or, drive 70 miles southeast of Walker and you're in New Orleans, known the world over for its charming history, cuisine, arts, architecture, music and professional sports. And the white sandy beaches of Mississippi are but a little more than an hour's drive. Looking for an outdoors adventure closer to home? Bass Pro Shops is five minutes away.

Get fit

Dance those inches off with Zumba or tone up with Pilates at Z-Time. Spend an hour doing dips and squats or jump on the treadmill at Snap Fitness or Anytime Fitness. Hook up the iPod and take a walk or a jog on the trail in Sidney Hutchinson Park. Or sign up for one of our city recreational leagues. Whatever your routine for staying fit, Walker has a gym, studio, park or program to help you reach your goals close to home.

The best little boutiques

Walker is home to a handful of little locally owned shops and boutiques, featuring a selection of unique gifts you can't find anywhere else. Browse around for a few hours, and you'll find one-of-a-kind handmade jewelry, soy candles in every imaginable scent and a few things to pamper your pooch.

We'll throw ya somethin'

Walker celebrates the Mardi Gras season with — what else? A parade! Ours is completely family friendly, though — absolutely nothing that would make Aunt Myrtle blush here. Catch a glimpse of festive floats, antique cars, horseback riders, marching bands, dancers and other performers from throughout the region as they wind their way through the heart of Walker. Beads, candy and other prizes are always plentiful. For details, click here.

Ahhh! at the spa

No need to head into the big city for a mani/ pedi or massage. Thankfully, Walker has its own havens from the hustle and bustle of daily life that cater to your health and beauty needs. Whether it be a makeover, airbrush tanning, eyelash extensions, ear candling, body wraps, facials, manicures and pedicures or Swedish relaxation massages, you can find it in Walker. For listings, click here.

Light up the sky

CityFest — Walker's Independence Day celebration — is a festival of fun. Spend the afternoon in Sidney Hutchinson Park with a picnic, inflatables, train rides, games and more. Then lean back and look to the sky for an impressive fireworks show. For details, click here.

A very merry Christmas to all

You just haven't experienced Christmas until you've done it up Walker style. We devote an entire month to the holidays. On Dec. 1, Sidney Hutchinson Park suddenly twinkles with thousands of decorative lights and animated Christmas scenes, as well as family-friendly holiday flicks at Movies Under the Stars every night. At our Country Christmas Festival in late December, Santa makes a special appearance for photos, and his merry elves serve up hot cocoa and cookies. Families can take a ride on The Polar Express, our festive train, and jump around or slide on the inflatables. And those who attend can enjoy the beautiful caroling of our community church choirs. You won't want to miss our Christmas parade through town, with Santa leading the way. That evening, we light up our 30-foot Christmas tree in the center of town, adorned with ornaments crafted by first graders. And as the big day nears, Santa and his elves travel through the neighborhoods on one special night - courtesy of the City of Walker - caroling and bringing presents to all the good girls and boys.
