The Year
in Review
How did the City of Walker put your tax dollars to work for you in 2011? Check out our Year in Review, We Built This City, so named because it was Walker's first official year as a city, and we as a community worked together to continue improving our quality of life. Mardi Gras Parade rolls on Saturday
The City of Walker will again celebrate the Mardi Gras season with a parade—one that's completely family friendly. The event is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4. Catch a glimpse of festive floats, antique cars, dancers and other performers from throughout the region as they wind their way through the heart of Walker. Beads, candy and other prizes will be plentiful! You can still sign up to participate, and there is no entry fee. You can walk, pull a little red wagon, drive a golf cart or ATV, ride in a truck or trailer, or go all out with a fancy float. All participants must complete a mandatory parade entry form. Participants should plan to line up at 11 a.m. the day of the parade at Walker High School. The parade will start at Walker High School and travel east on Burgess Avenue to La. 447. It will then travel south on La. 447 one block to Florida Boulevard. The parade will then head west on Florida Boulevard to Palmetto Street, where it will travel north to Burgess Avenue, returning to the high school. For all the details, click here. Tball, baseball & softball registration
Registration for the upcoming Walker Parks & Recreation T-Ball, baseball and softball season for boys and girls of all ages continues through Feb. 28. You can find all the information and forms online here. Click "read more" for the appropriate sport. We'd like to thank our 2012 sponsor, Dick's Sporting Goods. They are providing $6,000 in new supplies for our teams, including ball buckets, balls, score books and coaching bags, as well as a grant. The company is also offering two City of Walker Little League Shopping Days, where our families will receive coupons for specific items and 15% off their entire purchase. Those dates are March 17 and April 14. Parents will receive the coupons and more information once they have registered.
Municipal Court is shifting to daytime hours
Beginning in April, the City of Walker's Municipal Court will shift to daytime hours. The change will save this community an estimated $30,000 annually in expenses associated with scheduling court in the evenings. Court will begin at 9 a.m. on designated days in the Walker Municipal Building Courtroom, 10136 Florida Blvd. For additional information about Walker Municipal Court, click here. Questions? Call Clerk of Court Jan McDonald at [225] 664-7692.
Walker Metals grand opening
Next week, the City of Walker will welcome its newest manufacturing facility, Walker Metals. The company, which produces metal roofing and steel building products for residential or commercial projects, was a $1.2 million capital investment that brings 10 additional jobs to our community. The 14,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in the CoMar Commerce Centre on U.S. 190 near La. 449, provides custom lengths in a variety of colors with next-day service. The panels are fire resistant, energy efficient and resistant to wind, storm and hail. A ribbon cutting and grand opening is planned for 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8. All are welcome to come tour the facility.
Our Lady of the Lake reaches construction milestone
Construction crews have put the last beam of steel in place to frame the new medical complex that will house physician offices and a free-standing Emergency Room. The hospital celebrated with a steel topping out celebration and blessing. The facility is on schedule to open in September of this year. The free-standing Emergency Room is much like a traditional Emergency Room. It will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and can treat any type of emergency, including sports injuries, fractures or broken bones, car accidents, chest pain and more. "The difference is a free-standing Emergency Room is not located on a hospital campus," says Dean Williams, vice president of operations at Our Lady of the Lake. "If a patient has to be admitted to a hospital, we will treat the patient at Our Lady of the Lake Livingston, make sure they are comfortable and sta ble, and we will have ambulances on site to bring the patient to the most appropriate hospital." Our Lady of the Lake Livingston will include outpatient services including a lab; imaging services such as CT, ultrasound, X-ray and MRI; and physician offices. Primary care and family practice doctors, pediatricians and specialists such as cardiology, orthopedics, ENT, eye specialists and pain management doctors will occupy the physician office space. The hospital will create more than 200 health care jobs in the first year of operation. For updates or to see construction progress through a live webcam, click here.
