Bring out the red, white & blue
We know it's a little early to get in the mood for the Fourth of July. But sponsorships are now available for the City of Walker's popular CityFest, an old-fashioned Independence Day celebration. It's scheduled for Saturday, June 30, in Sidney Hutchinson Park. You or your business can be the ones to bring fireworks, hot air balloons, live music or children's events to the community with any donation between $1 or $1,500. Your name or logo will be included on a sign in the park, as well as on the CityFest website. Depending on the amount you give, there are other benefits as well, like setting up a promotional banner and tent in the park. To see our website, click here. For sponsorship information, click here.
Your flood zone status may have changed
If your home wasn't in a flood zone before, it may be now. And even if you were in a flood zone, your status may have changed. That's why it's critical that you review the new Flood Insurance Rate Maps, and doing so before April 3 could save you money. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has revised flood maps for Livingston Parish, delineating new flood-risk zones, which could mean a change in your floodplain status. The new Flood Insurance Rate Maps were developed as part of a nationwide map modernization effort spearheaded by FEMA, which administers the National Flood Insurance Plan [NFIP] that plays a key role in defense against flood losses. The new flood maps for Walker are available for viewing at the Walker Municipal Building, 10136 Florida Blvd., during normal business hours. We are also working to schedule a public meeting with a representative from FEMA to answer any questions our residents may have about their status. Livingston Parish property owners without flood insurance are encouraged to buy coverage now to get the best possible premiums before the new flood insurance rate maps take effect on April 3. Those who do so may be able to grandfather the current flood-zone designation, saving money on flood insurance. Current policy holders and those planning to purchase NFIP protection are strongly encouraged to contact their insurance agent or company to ensure that they have adequate coverage and that policies account for new flood-risk data.
Business is booming
Business continues to boom in the City of Walker. In January, our community had a whopping 39% increase in sales tax collections over the previous January. In 2012, we collected $409,147, compared to $293,796 during that same month a year ago. That's money that pays for services like public safety, parks and recreation, roads, free family-friendly events and more. Our growth certainly helps. So far this year, we've welcomed four new or expanding businesses: Walker Metals, Freedom Prosthetics, Elite Physical Therapy & Wellness and Totally Tan Salon. Last year, we welcomed 38 new businesses to our community. You can read more about them in our Year in Review here.
Get in on the Summer Craft Fair
Expect thousands of guests at the City of Walker's Summer Craft Fair this year. Why? We're holding it in conjunction with our popular CityFest, an old-fashioned Independence Day celebration in Sidney Hutchinson Park. The Craft Fair is scheduled for 2 p.m. until dusk, and is expected to benefit from visitors all across the region who attend the afternoon of free family fun, live music, a Taste of CityFest and a massive fireworks show. Craft-enthusiasts and artists can reserve a space for just $50, which will go to benefit the Walker Animal Shelter. For all the details and a registration form, click here.
