Your Gas Water Heater

Here are some tips for properly maintaining your gas water heater:

» Do a basic safety check. Make sure the drainpipe from the relief valve on the top of the water heater is always unobstructed. Shut the heater off and have it serviced if water or steam is coming from the pipe. Is the draft hood securely fastened to the top of the heater? If not, exhaust may be deflected into your home.

» Keep flammables away. Keep the area around and under the water heater clean and free of combustible materials. Never store flammable liquids in your home as the vapors can be ignited by pilot lights.

» Drain water regularly. You can drain a few gallons of water from the water heater to remove sediment from the bottom. Follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding how to do this and how often. If this has never been done, call a service representative.

» Insulate carefully. If you install an insulation blanket to save energy, follow installation instructions carefully. Do not block the controls, air intakes or water heater flue.

» Make sure the air intakes, drainpipes, controls and flue on your water heater are always unobstructed.
